DeepCool Fryzen

If you are looking at building an socket TR4 platform for Threadripper 2 processor you'll likely find yourself looking for a CPU cooler. The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2950X And 2990WX 16/32-core processor has a default TDP of 180/250W Watts. Something that makes Threadrippers quite different from other CPU's is its large size, which complicates cooling it but there are some coolers out there with full-size plates, though the list is not long. Now there is another to the list thanks to Deepcool Gamerstorm and its launch of the Fryzen cooler. The GamerStorm Fryzen is a large tower-type CPU air cooler designed for AMD socket TR4. Its 68 mm x 46 mm base offers 100% coverage of the AMD Ryzen Threadripper IHS (integrated heatspreader).

In addition to supporting the TR4 socket, it can also be used with the smaller AM4 socket and many older AMD sockets, all the way back to AM2 and FM1.

Packaging & Contents

DeepCool Fryzen comes in a really nice and stiff black with turkuaz accents box. It's surely the best coolers box I've ever seen. It has that sleek professional look, I am really impressed. Front side of the box actually has an image of the cooler and the Gamer Storm Logo.

Back side of box has the specifications.

The features and some bar code sticker are present on the left side.

Moving on, the right side has Fryzen in turkuaz and a quick hit list of the cooler's features.

DeepCool includes all mounting hardware and accessories necessary to setup and run the cooler in your system, including mounting hardware and screws. Inside, there is also an instructions booklet which I found easy to use, as well a tube of thermal paste.

Accessories related to LED illumination are four:RGB Controler, Adapter Cable, D type 3 PIN conversion cable and 3 PIN conversion cable.

A Closer Look

With the fan installed the Fryzen measures 124 mm x 81.5 mm x 164.6 mm (WxDxH). It weighs 1.18 kg. A black acrylic plate is installed in the center of the aluminum frame. On the top surface, and inside it is an addressable LED illumination of the Deepcool logo.

The cooling fan that comes standard with Deepcool Fryzen is equipped with an X-shaped aluminum frame with addressable LED illumination on the intake surface, and the entire frame is made of aluminum exclusively. The cooling fan is fixed to the heat sink with a plastic clip, and it can be removed. It's very difficult to replace it.

The fan blade also has a two-layer structure and it is a very stiff design. The fan speed can be controlled within the range of 500 to 1800 RPM by PWM speed control.

The side plate also has the merit of being able to support the frame by grasping it when holding the CPU cooler by hand.

A screw with a spring for fixing the CPU cooler is installed on the left and right of the base plate. The screw head of the screw is a hexagon with a large diameter and can be tightened with the attached wrench, but since it also has a plus / minus groove, it can also be tightened with a screwdriver. There is also a notch for passing the axis of the driver on the side of the heat sink, so it will be oriented diagonally but it can be tightened with the driver without problems.

The parallel arrangement of 6 heat pipes allows extreme heat dissipation performance.

These are connected to the fins well, with no visible gaps to be found.

The Cooler adopts a 68 mm x 46 mm nickel-plated large copper base plate capable of covering most of the 68 mm x 51 mm CPU heat spreader of a very large Ryzen Threadripper CPU. The base is very smooth; however, it is still far away from a mirror finish.

Installation

The Fryzen corresponds to both the AM4 platform of Ryzen CPU and the TR4 platform of Ryzen Threadripper CPU, but this time we will focus on the TR4 platform. First of all, mount the standoff for the TR4 platform in the screw holes of the four corners of the CPU socket.

Next, place the mounting bracket on the standoff and fix the mounting bracket with the hand screw nuts. Then apply thermal grease to the CPU's heat spreader. The recommended way is to press 9 small drops (3-4mm diameter) of thermal grease onto the the heatspreader in a square 3x3 pattern. Continue by adding 4 larger drops (5-6mm diameter) of thermal grease in a square pattern at the center.

Take off the protection cover at the bottom side of the heatsink. Then put the heatsink onto the CPU so that the two spring-loaded screws align with the threads of the CPU socket. Use the supplied mounting tool to tighten the screws.

Deepcool Fryzen's heat sink top plate and cooling fan are equipped with addressable LED illumination, and lighting control is possible by the control function of the attached controller and the motherboard. Built-in 16.7M true color RGB flowing light series with 5 effects (dynamic color, static, breathing, comet and fashion collision) for the top cover and fan provide up to 36 different modes and easily controlled with a wired controller (included) or motherboards with synchronized lighting control via an addressable RGB function. It also supports all the major brands RGB functionality, with Asus Aura Sync RGB, Asrock Polychrome Sync, Gigabyte RGB Fusion, and MSI Mystic Light Sync to customize your functionality with it, allowing you to sync it to music or in game functions for those who are very interested in creating a light show.

There is no intrusion with graphics cards and into the memory slots on either side of the CPU socket.

Temperature

This DeepCool Air Cooler do a pretty good job! DeepCool's Fryzen stays in front of the competition.

Keep in mind that the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX processor is rated at 250W.

Noise Level

DeepCool Fryzen does extremely well at 25% fan speed. DeepCool Fryzen still does well at maximum fan speed as a reading of 42 dBA.

Final Thoughts

Some people take this as “They’re frying the Ryzen?” but you could also read “Frozen Ryzen”, I’m not sure, but for some reason, I love the absurdity of the name. What does matter, however, is how badass the cooler looks. I mean, seriously, just look at that beast! The symmetrical heat pipes, the X mount on the cooler, the metal side panels. Every bit of it looks sexy. If you’re looking for an air cooler for Threadripper that really stands out, this is it. It's one of the most easy and comfortable kits on the market to use and install. The RGB lighting looks fantastic. Provided with the Fryzen is a pair of motherboard adaptors, for syncing the RGB lighting with many motherboards, as well as a SATA power adaptor with in-line RGB controls for those without RGB motherboard headers. The Fryzen isn’t all for show. We overclocked the 32-Core / 64-Thread Beast 2990WX in our review at 4.0GHz. Overclockers looking to get the most out of a Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX will likely want to use an All-In-One (AIO) liquid cooler or a custom water loop. Those that don’t want to use water cooling and are looking to overclock should be able to get away with this air cooler. One wouldn’t expect there to be many air coolers that can hand that, but there are now over 20 all-in-one water cooling solutions and at least five air cooler options that are able to handle a Ryzen Threadripper processor at OC clock speeds. The DeepCool Fryzen is truly outstanding. It rises above a lot air-cooling competitors while giving even loud 120mm AIO liquid coolers a run for their money. At 25%, its fan only spin at 500 RPM. Staying below 1000 RPM nearly makes it a dead-silent cooling solution, and although the 1800 RPM the fan max out at produces a hum, you will not hear the fan once the cooler is inside a case. Its top quality fan really make this CPU cooler shine.

$89.99 is expensive, although I do feel it's justified given the level of quality and attention to detail. Also, there aren't any cheaper alternatives for the socket TR4 platform. For Threadripper air cooling, this cooler checks all the boxes for enthusiasts and overclockers alike. The nice accessories bundle includes LED illumination adapters, and DeepCool's excellent packaging really sets the Fryzen apart. Overall, DeepCool has done a fantastic job.
