FM radio is a tried and tested technology, going strong for nearly 100 years since its invention by Edwin Howard Armstrong. With over 2 million hours of FM radio broadcast every day across the globe, it’s still a reliable source of entertainment, news, and emergency alerts—especially in areas without internet access or during crisis situations. When the power goes out, staying informed is a matter of safety. Most of us carry a cell phone wherever we go, but without a way to recharge when the battery runs low, we can become isolated. Owning a hand-crank radio solves a few problems. First, it operates efficiently on its own battery, so you can listen to many hours of news and weather reports without depleting your phone. Second, the hand crank turns a small generator inside the radio that recharges the battery—no other source of electricity is required. Finally, most hand-crank radios feature a USB charging port so that they can serve as a portable charging station for phones or other small electronics. Sandberg has taken this classic technology and brought it into the modern age with the launch of their new range of FM radios. These devices aren’t just about tuning in to your favourite stations. They also come packed with survival-ready features like power banks, solar panels, and LED lights—ideal for those who love the outdoors or want to be prepared for any emergency. The model we're analyzing is Survivor Radio All-in-1 2000.

Here are the specifications as provided by the Sandberg product page.

Sandberg keeps things pretty light inside the packaging, with minimal paperwork to worry about. Inside the box we just have the unit, safaty instructions and a quick guide.

The included USB-A to USB-C charge cable is just 50 cm long. It’s long enough to give you some flexibility, yet short enough that it won’t get caught on stray corners in your house.

A Closer Look

The radio's body is made from a nice feeling plastic. There is a retractable antenna.

There is a lanyard/carrying cord.

Flash Light button.

When you're away from power, you can use the built-in solar panel and the attached crank handle for emergency charging.

Performance

You can use the light while listening to the radio. Turn the crank at 120- 150 rpm (2 - 2.5 times per second). 1 minute of turning can power the radio for about 3 minutes.

Charging time by the solar panel (battery 0-25%) is 20 hours. It takes three hours to be charged via the adapter. Charging your smartphone is just a bonus from the battery capacity. However, it went from 72% to 80% in 10 minutes, so I think it will be useful in an emergency.

Final Thoughts

Sandberg Survivor Radio All-in-1 2000 is a device that will allow you to listen to your favorite music, radio broadcasts and information no matter where you are. The integrated solar panel allows you to replenish the battery's power in an ecological way and independent of the electricity grid. All you need to do is place your portable emergency radio in a place that receives sunlight so that the equipment is charged and ready to use. Thanks to this, you can take the device to the beach or a longer trip without having to worry about buying a battery or lack of access to a socket. I'm glad that it has an LED light. You can place it and use it like a lantern. Sandberg Survivor Radio All-in-1 2000 also has a built-in flashlight, which proves to be particularly useful in emergency situations or when the available light sources are insufficient. 3 strong, long-life LEDs with a power of 3 × 1 W provide bright and powerful lighting in all conditions. It can charge via solar energy, but you should not expect too much of this. If you don't have time to charge via solar panel, you can use the special crank, which allows you to fully refill the battery in a very short time. Crank charging is a simple and ecological method that does not require the use of any external energy sources. In the case of this portable crank radio, approximately 1 minute of turning is enough for 10-15 minutes of listening to the radio and will allow you to enjoy your favorite programs and music outdoors or in various emergency situations. Thanks to the fact that the radio with a power bank can act as a portable power source, it is very useful in situations when you do not have access to the network and during long journeys. The emergency signaling function is another advantage of this portable radio alarm with a power bank and a flashlight. Although the SOS signal is standard in the segment of alarm devices, in the case of Sandberg Survivor Radio All-in-1 2000 it was especially loud and clear, making it easily noticeable even in difficult conditions. This means that in situations of immediate danger, when every second counts, this solar alarm radio with a crank will become your invaluable support. To activate the alarm, simply press the SOS button on the radio. Once activated, the device will emit a characteristic sound signal that will attract the attention of people nearby and enable them to call for help. As for the radio, I think it depends on the location and the signal conditions, but I could hear it without any problems in my house. Tuning does not support preset favorite radio stations as it can scan channels only manually. Also it's not waterproof or dustproof.

With the unpredictable nature of crises like power outages, internet blackouts, or natural disasters, having access to essential news or even some entertainment can be a lifesaver. This Sandberg radio ensure that you’ll be prepared for any situation. Whether you’re looking for an affordable pocket radio or a full survival toolkit in radio form, Sandberg’s latest offering deliver quality and versatility with their five-year warranty to back it up. The Price is €44.99.
